What to Do During a Hard Drive Crash

You may know it when your computer is crashing because it will give you telltale signs. But what if it happens already? What can you do? Here are some things that you can do even if you are no expert.
1. Turn off and turn on the power. When the computer crashes, turn the unit off. Then after a few minutes, turn it on again. More often than not, the first crash is often not fatal. So when you turn the computer again, it will once again perform normally. But don’t be too trusting–backup your files! Doing a full system backup will protect you from losing your data when the next crash, which can be more fatal, happens.
2. Check PC cable or component connection. Sometimes it is just a loose connection that causes the crash but it will give you the same message as if the computer crashes. If you want, you can turn off your computer and unplug the connection. Then open the case and make sure that all cables and connectors are attached properly. Then try to turn it on again.
3. Boot your computer from the CD drive. Using a boot disc, start up your computer. If you have successfully entered, reinstall your OS and proceed to data recovery.
If you cannot seem to understand the codes and message in your screen, don’t panic. The best thing to do is to call a computer technician to prevent further damage.
